1. Studio Photography: The How's, What's, and Why's

In the article, “Understanding Digital Exposure”, we discussed in detail how the photographer can, and indeed must, react to the lighting conditions in a scene. Of course, not only must the photographer contend with obtaining proper exposure for one shot, but the light is constantly changing as the day progresses, so the exposure then too is constantly in need of attention. In the article, “Understanding Digital White Balance”, we learned that exposure is not alone on our list of concerns; we must pay much attention to Color Temperature and adjust our white balance accordingly. This too is a moving target as the time of day changes. There are also countless other variables that a photographer must account for, and, adapt to, in order to compose and record naturally lit pictures.

That being said, its little mystery why studio photography is so popular and effective…control!  In the confines of the studio a photographer is no longer at the mercy of the lighting, but, rather, they are in control of it. However, effectiveness in the studio will require an understanding of many of the techniques we’ve previously discussed coupled with new techniques and equipment.
