1. Understanding White Balance In Digital Photography

In the “Understanding Digital Exposure” article we discussed the effect that light has on our photos and how important properly exposing that light is to the quality of our images.  However, exposure is not alone in defining how our final images will be represented. The color of the image is as important, and arguably, more important in many instances.

How disappointing is it when the color of our photos does not reflect our recollection of the scene?  Unfortunately, this happens all too often if we don’t pay attention to white balance. Pictures taken under florescent lights look yellowish; pictures under tungsten bulbs look bluish, even outside pictures sometimes turn up with a strange bluish color cast: all the result of incorrect white balance.
