1. When Exposure Gets Tricky: Difficult Lighting Situations in Photography
In the “Understanding Exposure” article we discussed properly exposing our pictures in order to ensure that detail is captured for all important subjects in the scene. Unfortunately, our artistic intentions may sometimes fall into contention with the technical capabilities of our equipment. The sensors of our digital cameras have only a certain tolerance for variances in light. If the light across our scene is wider in scale than the tolerance of our sensor, then we will be unable to capture adequate detail in all portions of the scene. In the article, “Using Exposure and Contrast to Artistic Effect”, we discussed ways in which we may embrace this high contrast lighting to compose some artful pictures; however, there are times when our vision for the scene will not allow us to resort to low-key, high-key, or silhouetting techniques. In these cases, we must implement methods by which we alter the variance of light across our scene in order to bring it back into the camera’s realm of tolerance.
