6. Technical Readings

As mentioned above, a photo-sensitive mediums tolerance to light variance is defined as scale of greys on each side of the mid-tone. An age-old tradition still of significant value for aligning our exposure within this mid-tone range is the 18% grey card. This 18% grey card, meaning that the card is printed in such a fashion as to reflect 18% of the light falling on it has been used for some time as a valuable standardization and benchmarking tool.  To use it, one would position the card in the area of most significance and take a meter reading from it. This neutral density metering provides some objective reference for other colors in the scene. Of course, it is cumbersome to carry a grey card and impractical for use in large scenes such as landscapes. In substitute for a grey card, other more neutral elements in the scene may help to account for accurate coloring such as green grass and grey concrete that are not in direct sunlight.
