1. Understanding Exposure In Photography

The photographer’s goal is accurately, or artistically, capturing a scene.  The camera captures images by recording the light emitted or reflected from the objects in the scene on some light-sensitive medium. Traditionally, that medium has been film or negative, today it is typically the photo-sensitive sensor in digital cameras. Either way, the moral of the story remains the same—it’s all about light!

In order to accurately, or artistically, portray a scene at hand, the photographer must understand the light; how much light should be captured, how that light compares to other light in the scene, and how that light will impact the mood of the captured scene.

In order to better understand these fundamental principals of photography, this discussion will walk through the three primary steps in taking an intentionally exposed picture: Understanding the light in the scene, and, controlling the light as perceived by the camera.
